Welcome

About Wychwood

200 acres of Norfolk countryside, where two beautiful properties, a working farm, and unforgettable venues for celebrations and gatherings unfold just a stone’s throw from Norwich.

Two beautiful properties, a working farm, and special venues across 200 acres of Norfolk’s charming countryside.

First purchased in 1947 by Harold Vincent Mackintosh, 1st Viscount Mackintosh of Halifax, as part of the historic Thickthorn Estate, Wychwood came into its own in 1957, when his daughter Mary and her husband Michael built Wychwood House, set within the beautiful landscape it remains part of today.

Under her stewardship, the farm took its current form: parkland, open fields, mature woodland, ponds, a stream, and a lake, anchored by Wychwood House and Wychwood Lodge.

Today, Wychwood offers two exceptional properties and a collection of distinctive venues providing unique settings for weddings, celebrations, events, and retreats — with a stunning backdrop of wildlife and tranquility. Just five minutes from Norwich.

The Lodge House has been recently renovated to create bright, comfortable open-plan living. It features two inviting bedrooms, a luxury bathroom, and a south-facing terrace complete with a dining table, outdoor sofa, and BBQ — perfect for relaxed al fresco evenings. Wychwood House is currently undergoing a complete transformation, blending contemporary luxury with rustic charm. It will sleep up to 18 guests across five double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, two additional double bedrooms sharing a bathroom, and two smaller rooms with four single beds and a shared bathroom. Spacious open-plan living areas include a games room, a snug, and generous kitchen and dining spaces. Outside, a large terrace with an open-air kitchen, dining and lounge seating, and a hot tub complete the experience, all set against the backdrop of Wychwood’s beautiful parkland.

Farm

The farm today is primarily focused on sustainability, protecting and evolving the landscape to enhance the habitat for all forms of wildlife.

Following the discovery of a family photograph by Charles, Mary’s eldest son, we learned that a flock of Norfolk Horn sheep once grazed the parkland. In 2015, the now very rare breed of Norfolk Horn was reintroduced to Wychwood by Charles.

We now have one of the largest flocks in the country, with the sheep a focal point of farming activity.

Our Vision

At Wychwood, we are committed to protecting the beauty and spirit of the land for future generations. Our vision is to continue nurturing a thriving, sustainable farm, while evolving Wychwood as a place for gathering, celebration, and reconnection with nature.

We are restoring habitats, encouraging biodiversity, and breathing new life into the landscape — from the parkland and woodland to the ponds and pastures. Alongside this, we are developing new spaces for unforgettable events, ensuring every experience at Wychwood stays rooted in its timeless setting.

At the heart of everything we do is a simple idea: to tread lightly, to grow thoughtfully, and to share the magic of Wychwood with everyone who comes here.
